Titre : Biological Control in Plant Protection Autre titre : A Colour Handbook, Second Edition (English Edition) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Neil Helyer, Auteur ; Nigel D. Cattlin, Auteur ; Kevin C. Brown, Auteur Editeur : CRC Press Année de publication : 2014 Importance : 262 pages Format : 17.78 x 1.91 x 25.4 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84076-117-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Plant injuries, diseases, pests Index. décimale : 632 Note de contenu : There has been a large increase in the commercial use of integrated crop/pest management methods for pest and disease control on a wide range of crops throughout the world since the first edition of this book. The completely revised second edition of the bestselling Biological Control in Plant Protection: A Color Handbook continues the objective of providing a handbook with profiles and full-color photographs of as many examples of biological control organisms from as wide a global area as possible. It is designed to help readers anticipate and recognize specific problems of pest management and then resolve them using the natural enemies of pests—parasites, predators, and pathogens.
The authors first describe the impact of predator-prey relationships on host plant species in arable, orchard, and protected environments. The main sections of the book include profiles of pests, beneficial arthropods (insects and mites), and beneficial pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes), featuring a tabular pest identification guide. Descriptions of biocontrol organisms are divided into four sections: species characteristics, lifecycle, crop/pest associations, and influences of growing practices. The text is illustrated throughout with color photographs of the highest quality.
This revised edition helps readers more fully understand the concepts and practice of biological control and integrated pest management. All chapters have been updated and expanded, and more than 300 new photographs have been added. The second edition covers new beneficial organisms and pest profiles, and it includes a new chapter on the practical aspects and application of biological control. It also contains a new final chapter that puts biological control in perspective, discussing interactions that occur when using biocontrol for population management as well as some of the possible mechanisms of biocontrol.Biological Control in Plant Protection ; A Colour Handbook, Second Edition (English Edition) [texte imprimé] / Neil Helyer, Auteur ; Nigel D. Index. décimale : 636 Note de contenu : Biomedical research involving animals remains essential for the advancement of the medical, veterinary, agricultural, and biological sciences. Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science, Volume II, Third Edition: Animal Models explains in great detail the comparative considerations underlying the choice of animal species and strains in different research disciplines.
Efficient and humane experimental work with animals, in which subjects experience no avoidable pain and mental distress, requires skillful and conscientious staff. To this end, scientists apply the three R’s: replacing experiments on live animals with alternative methods, reducing the number of animals necessary to obtain valid results within experiments, and refining techniques to minimize the discomfort experienced by the animal participants.

Index. décimale : 636 Note de contenu :
While replacing and reducing the use of laboratory animals are integral parts of the 3Rs―replace, reduce, refine―which form the cornerstones of laboratory animal science, biomedical research involving animals remains absolutely essential for the advancement of the medical, veterinary, agricultural, and biological sciences. Building upon the bestselling previous edition, the Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science, Volume III, Third Edition: Animal Models complements volumes I and II of the third edition by completing the task of providing a comprehensive overview of animal models in all biomedical disciplines.
The three Rs have been integrated throughout this handbook to promote efficient and humane experimental work with animals. Written by international experts, each chapter focuses on an important subdiscipline of laboratory animal science and can be used as a stand-alone text. This volume contains new chapters for six additional disease animal models: spinal cord injury, cardiovascular diseases, sudden infant death syndrome, developmental disorders, eye diseases, and human cancer. It also presents a new chapter on applying reduction and refinement to animal models.
This handbook can be used for undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory animal science courses, and as a handbook for scientists who work with animals in their research, for university veterinarians, for regulators, and for other specialists in laboratory animal science.
